Rowing Across Pacific

NAKHODKA, Far East () -- A British explorer set out Wednesday in a rowboat from the port of Nakhodka in the Russian Far East on a solo voyage across the Pacific Ocean on his way to San Francisco.

Peter Bird, 49, only made it as far as Japan on two earlier attempts to cross the Pacific in a rowboat.

Bird's boat is about nine meters long and weighs about 280 kilograms. The boat is equipped with a modern navigation system, a desalting kit, and communications gear to keep him in touch with Japan, France and the United States.
