Premier to Sweden

MOSCOW () -- Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin will visit Sweden on May 3 to 4 to improve cooperation between Russia and states bordering on the Baltic Sea, his press spokesman said Tuesday.

Chernomyrdin is expected to visit the Swedish capital Stockholm and then the Baltic Sea port of Visby to attend a regular session of the 11-nation Council of Baltic Sea States.

Russia's claim to being a Baltic Sea state comes from the Kaliningrad region, former German territory that was seized by the Soviet Union during World War II and is now a Russian enclave bordering Poland and Lithuania.

After visiting Sweden, Chernomyrdin is expected to make a stopover in the Finnish capital Helsinki before returning to Russia, Itar-Tass quoted spokesman Viktor Konnov as saying.
