Police School Opens

KHARKIV, Ukraine () -- Responding to a recent rise in crime across Ukraine, the Interior Ministry has opened a high school for would-be police officers to try to steer adolescents away from the streets and onto a beat.

Kharkiv's Interior Ministry Lycee, a state-funded school in eastern Ukraine administered by Ukraine's Interior Ministry University, accepted 59 boys for its first term, starting in January.

Anatoly Klochko, the school's principal, said there were no plans to admit girls, at least for the first few years.

The boys took an oath of allegiance to Ukraine upon entrance. After graduation, they will be offered spots in the Interior Ministry University or junior police posts.

Unlike previous meetings in Paris, Rome and Dayton, Ohio, the Moscow conference will focus on the implementation of decisions adopted earlier rather than the decision-making process, Interfax said.
