Pensioners' Ranks Up

MOSCOW () -- The number of pensioners in Russia has increased, and one in five people in the country are now retired, an official has said.

Russia's 37.1 million pensioners make up 20.2 percent of the population, up from 18.5 percent in 1989, Social Security Minister Ludmilla Bezlepkina said Monday.

Pensioners have been hard hit by market reforms and are some of the strongest supporters of the renascent Communist Party. Bezlepkina blamed the decline in pensions on a drop in the number of workers supporting the pension fund. She said the number of workers in Russia was down to 68.6 million in 1995 from 75.8 million in 1991.

Retirement age for most workers is 55 for women and 60 for men.
