New 100 Meters Record

DURBAN, South Africa () -- South African swimmer Penny Heyns, 21, broke the women's 100 meters breaststroke world record Monday.

Heyns, swimming at the South African National Championships, clocked 1:07.46, beating the previous record of 1:07.69, held by Samantha Riley of Australia since September 1994.

Heyns, who came close to the record last year at the World Student Games in Japan, had warned she would be trying again at the national championships.
