Matzo Production On Bakers' Menu

The Bakers' Guild has agreed to produce matzo for Passover in answer to appeal from the mayor and the city's Jewish community, a city spokesman has said.

According to Mayor Yury Luzhkov's office, it is the first time Moscow bakers have mobilized to produce matzo on a large scale. It took considerable efforts on the part of Luzhkov and the city administration to organize the production.

According to Interfax, the flat, thin, unleavened bread eaten during the eight-day festival of Passover will be produced by one of the bakeries of the Khleb Fillipova company. The choice of the bakery, located in the All-Russian Exhibition Center, formerly VDNKh, has been approved by the city's Jewish community.

Passover celebrations are one of many signs that after 70 years of official atheism under communism, religious life in Russia is reviving.

Passover begins this year at sundown April 3.
