At the Maly Theater on Monday, the Golden Mask National Theater Awards honored the top Russian theater events for the 1994/95 season. Winners in the dramatic category were: Production: "The Tempest," Kazan Youth Theater. Director: Sergei Zhenovach, "The Idiot," Theater Na Maloi Bronnoi. Actor: Konstantin Raikin, "The Metamorphosis," Satirikon. Actress: Olga Yakovleva, "The Final Ones," Tabakov Theater. Designer: Oleg Sheintsis, "The Seagull," Lenkom. Winners in the musical category were: Production: "Ernani," Stanislavsky, Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater. Director: Boris Pokrovsky, "The Fruits of Enlightenment," Pokrovsky Musical Theater. Actor: Anzor Shomakhia, "Don Pascuale," Perm Theater of Opera and Ballet. Actress: Tatyana Kyundzhi, "Don Pascuale." Designer: Vladimir Arefyev, "Ernani." Ballet awards went to "Tchaikovsky," (Boris Eifman Petersburg Ballet Theater) for best production; to Dmitry Bryantsev ("Illusory Ball" at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater) for best choreographer; to Albert Galichanin ("Tchaikovsky") for best male dancer. (No ballerinas were nominated.)


The Second Chekhov International Theater Festival opens March 30 to April 1 at the Mossoviet Theater with "The Diary of Vaslav Nijinsky" by Paris' Compagnie Champ Libre. Redjep Mitrovitsa stars in the one-man, French-language show, directed by Isabelle Nanty and Djamila Salah, and based on the last writings of the great dancer as he succumbed to madness. The Tours National Choreography Center plays "Fait Maison" April 1 and 2, while the world premiere of Peter Stein's staging of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" plays in Italian April 2 to 4.
