Valued Volunteers

In response to "Growing Pains Hit Women's Charity," by Arline Klatte, March 27.

On behalf of Action for Russia's Children, or ARC, I am writing to express displeasure with your article. By focusing on the growing pains instead of the growth, you have missed the real story of how the changes in ARC have benefited the community and membership alike. We regret that a few former members have felt displaced by ARC's expansion. But the fact that membership quadrupled in the last year attests to ARC's success in providing opportunities for women of all backgrounds to make a difference in the community.

Contrary to the assertions of the woman who hid behind anonymity, ARC values all 120 of its volunteers, regardless of their status. Without the diverse contributions of our members, we could not exist -- our volunteers are our most valuable asset.

Furthermore, your source is working on outdated information. Approximately half of our volunteers are engaged weekly in visiting orphanages to spend time with the children "rocking them and singing songs." This represents a tenfold increase in our presence in orphanages over the last year.

Most importantly, the membership increase has enabled ARC to expand our range of services dramatically. ARC now supports more than 50 programs serving thousands of needy children and adults in Moscow and beyond. ARC's members are proud of what we have achieved together.
