Lucid 'Unbothered'

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida () -- U.S. astronaut Shannon Lucid said Tuesday she was happy to do her share of housekeeping in the cramped space station Mir but graciously brushed off suggestions by her hosts that women were born to clean.

Lucid, a 53-year-old biochemist, made it clear to reporters during a video link-up to Earth that she would not participate in an orbiting battle of the sexes.

Russian General Yury Glazkov suggested a few days ago that Lucid likely would perform a needed service on Mir: cleaning its ventilation fans. "We know that women love to clean," he said.

"That kind of thinking doesn't bother me. We all work together to keep the place pretty tidy," Lucid told reporters.
