Long-Distance Cost Up

Moscow's telephone service MMT will raise tariffs on long-distance calls within Russia by about 20 percent Saturday, an MMT official said Friday.

Tatyana Sokolova, marketing engineer, said the first price hike in six months was necessary because of rising costs. Under the new rates, a one-minute call from Moscow to St. Petersburg will cost 1,300 rubles (26 cents), or 1,120 rubles for a government agency. A one-minute call to Khabarovsk would cost 2,700 rubles, or 2,340 rubles.

Weekend calls will cost half as much, she said.
