Leafs Fall To Detroit Power-Play

TORONTO -- Darren McCarty scored a power-play goal at 2:41 of overtime as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3.

When Maple Leafs defenseman Todd Gill failed to clear the puck from in front of goaltender Don Beaupre, McCarty picked the corner.

Dino Ciccarelli, Vladimir Konstantinov and Slava Kozlov scored for Detroit Wednesday night. Tie Domi, Brandon Convery and Mike Gartner scored for Toronto.

Don Beaupre (0-5-0) remained winless in a Toronto uniform while making 18 saves. Chris Osgood made 23 saves in the Detroit net.

Tough guys were in demand as NHL teams fine-tuned their rosters before the trading deadline expired Wednesday afternoon.

On a day that featured no blockbuster deals, three enforcers -- Ken Baumgartner of Toronto, Joe Kocur of the New York Rangers and Enrico Ciccone of Tampa Bay -- were among the 21 players to be dealt.

The Vancouver Canucks were the busiest, sending left-winger Alek Stojanov to Pittsburgh for left wing Markus Naslund, adding right wing Kocur and center Jesse Belanger from Florida.

The Ducks gave up a fourth-round draft pick for Baumgartner. The Rangers got minor league goalie Kay Whitmore from Vancouver, which got Belanger for future considerations.

Tampa Bay acquired defenseman Igor Ulanov and left wing Patrick Poulin from Chicago for Ciccone.
