Kuwaiti Women Protest

KUWAIT () -- Forty Kuwaiti women lawyers, scientists and academics waved placards outside the only elected legislature in Gulf Arab states Tuesday in a rare public demonstration to demand the vote and the right to stand for parliament.

The women, some of them former members of the civilian resistance during Iraq's 1990-91 occupation, accused the Kuwaiti government of reneging on a promise they said it made during the Gulf crisis to give women political rights.

The women planted a blackthorn tree on the central reservation of a highway outside the building to commemorate their 30-year-old campaign for political rights.
