Korea Campaign Starts

SEOUL () -- Posters and banners sprouted like spring flowers Tuesday as candidates launched campaigns in a parliamentary election President Kim Young-sam hopes will endorse his efforts to clean up South Korean politics.

The April 11 balloting will decide whether the president can maintain a ruling party majority in the unicameral General Assembly until the end of his five-year term in 1998.

Kim's carefully cultivated image as Mr. Clean was tarnished only three days before the start of the campaign when one of his chief aides was arrested and charged with taking $180,000 in bribes from businessmen.
