Kiev Treaty Set For Yeltsin Visit

A comprehensive friendship and cooperation treaty between Russia and Ukraine is ready for signing during President Boris Yeltsin's visit to Kiev on April 4 to 5, a Russian official said Tuesday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Krylov said the long-standing problem of dividing the Black Sea Fleet remained only partially resolved, but voiced hope the issue will be settled before Yeltsin's visit. "One can hardly imagine that a general political treaty on friendship and cooperation would be signed while the fleet problem remains unsolved,'' he said, according to Itar-Tass.

Krylov spoke after a meeting in Moscow between Ukrainian and Russian prime ministers.
