Junta Sets Succession

FREETOWN () -- Sierra Leone's military rulers will hand over power to a civilian president in two weeks, president-elect Ahmad Tejan Kabbah said Monday.

"Handing over of power to me as president is expected to take place in two weeks time," Tejan Kabbah told a large crowd of supporters a day after he was declared winner of the presidential poll in elections to end military rule. The military, which seized power in 1992 but offered the civilian-rule elections, have not said when their rule will end.

Sierra Leoneans thronged the streets of Freetown late into the night to celebrate the election of a civilian president after four years of army rule.
