Jumper Has Surgery

HAVANA () -- World long jump champion Ivan Pedroso, a leading gold medal hope for Cuba in the summer Olympics in Atlanta, has undergone surgery for a thigh injury, leaving him only a short time to get back to top form for the Games, his doctors said.

Pedroso was operated on at a Havana hospital on Monday and was recovering satisfactorily, state television said, but will be in a plaster cast for a month. Pedroso won gold last year at the G?teborg, Sweden, world championships with a jump of 8.71 meters.

Pedroso, also the indoor world champion, suffered the injury to his right thigh two weeks ago during an athletics meeting in Havana.
