Gunners Top Man City, Gain Ground

LONDON -- John Hartson scored twice and Lee Dixon added another as Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-1 to move into fifth place in England's Premier League.

Hartson scored his first in the 29th minute Tuesday and Dixon added his in the 41st to make it 2-0. Manchester City's Gerry Creaney scored in the 54th to cut the lead to 2-1, but minutes later Hartson got his second to clinch the victory.

The win gives Arsenal 48 points and a tie with Tottenham for fifth place. Newcastle, a 1-0 loser Monday to Manchester United, leads with 61 points to 60 for Manchester United.

Liverpool is in third with 55 points and Aston Villa has 49 in fourth place.

French league title contenders Metz and Auxerre both suffered defeats Tuesday, missing fine opportunities to narrow the gap on leader Paris St. Germain.

Third-place Metz slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat by lowly Lyon and Auxerre lost in Strasbourg by the same margin. Metz would no doubt have wished that its clash against Lyon, twice rescheduled because of snowfalls, had been postponed again.

Metz, which still has two games in hand, is six points adrift of PSG.

Auxerre, which has now made up all its games that had been delayed because of bad weather in recent weeks, stayed second, five points back.

Werder Bremen defeated Hamburg SV 2-1 in a Bundesliga soccer match Tuesday.

Heiko Scholz scored for Bremen at the 3rd minute to put the home team ahead. Harald Spoerl evened it at the 18th for Hamburg, and Rudolfo Cardoso put the Bremen team ahead for good at the 33rd with nearly 30,000 spectators in the stands. ()
