Grand Canyon Flooded

PAGE, Arizona () -- The silence of dawn was broken by an echoing roar as the Glen Canyon Dam's huge outlets were cracked wide open to spill a man-made flood through the Grand Canyon.

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt Tuesday opened the first of four huge valves, releasing millions of liters of the Colorado River from behind the dam. The experiment was aimed at refocusing the 33-year-old dam's operations to benefit the Grand Canyon's natural environment.

Water was gushing from the dam's outlets so fast it could fill Chicago's 110-story Sears Tower in 17 minutes. It will continue for seven days.
