Graf Dispatches Fernandez At Lipton Championships

KEY BISCAYNE, Florida -- Top-seeded Steffi Graf of Germany played impeccable tennis to brush aside ninth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez 6-1, 6-0 at the $4.1 million Lipton Championships.

It took the top-ranked Graf only 51 minutes to earn the stunning victory over the 13th-ranked Fernandez Monday night.

"I was astonished," Graf said of her performance. "I felt like I could hit whatever I felt I wanted to. It was perfect conditions out there, obviously there was no wind. I could have kept on going. I wouldn't have minded. It's a great, great feeling.

"I served extremely well, so I always was in the position to initiate the points," Graf said. "I think I was putting so much pressure on her that at the end I forced her to make more errors because she had to get closer to the lines."

Earlier in the day, No. 3 Andre Agassi survived a scare to take a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over 115th-ranked Jean-Philippe Fleurian of France.

The Lipton said its farewell to Jennifer Capriati, who lost a 6-1, 6-4 fourth-round match to fourth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina.

The unranked Capriati is expected to be ranked after this event, joining the charts somewhere around No. 105 in one week's time.

Although she lost to the sixth-ranked Sabatini, Capriati served notice she is here to stay after a two-year hiatus.

"As far as right now, I feel like I'm back," Capriati said.
