Gorbachev Urges Democrats' Unity

Russia's democratic forces must unite on the eve of Russian presidential elections to prevent a victory by President Boris Yeltsin or Communist challenger Gennady Zyuganov, former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev said Friday.

"We have an understanding that the party of power is a party of the minority, and so is Zyuganov's Communist Party of Russia," Gorbachev told a press conference Friday in Moscow, Interfax reported. "The majority is waiting for someone to cast their ballots for."

Gorbachev officially launched his own presidential campaign this week in St. Petersburg.

"Thank God, money and power do not solve all the problems," he said. "This is Gorbachev's merit."

Gorbachev also said Friday he had reached an agreement with Yabloko leader Grigory Yavlinsky, under which each of them will carry out his own election campaign, Interfax reported.

Gorbachev accused the Kremlin of trying to silence the media and other candidates.
