Georgian Sex Change

TBILISI, Georgia () -- The former Soviet republic of Georgia has performed its first sex change operation -- with the help of kerosene lamps because of its chronic power shortage.

Doctors turned 29-year-old Beka from a woman into a man in a 16-hour operation in Tbilisi earlier this month.

"It was a very difficult operation. Our generator kept shutting off and we had to heat the operating room with a kerosene stove," said nurse Karina Elibkyan of Aviation Hospital No. 31, where the operation was performed.

Beka, who asked that his last name not be used, is recovering well at the hospital, which used to serve workers from a plant making Russian Sukhoi fighter planes that is now idle.
