Freetown's New Regime

FREETOWN () -- Sierra Leone's army rulers ended four years in power on Friday, entrusting to elected President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah a country ravaged by a five-year civil war.

Brigadier Julius Maada Bio handed over the ceremonial staff of office to the new president, who vowed to break with past violence, greed and corruption and to restore the dignity and worth of each Sierra Leonian. The president pledged to meet rebel leader Foday Sankoh at the earliest opportunity to discuss peace.

"It is my desire that today should mark the end of that epoch and the start of a new era," he said.
