Fatal Shooting at Embassy Doorstep

One man died Monday in an apparent contract killing when a hail of bullets raked a Volvo on the street near the U.S. Embassy.

The victim is reported to be a Russian businessman. The driver of the car, which was hit by 15 bullets, appeared to have escaped without injury.

According to a U.S. Embassy spokesperson, the killing took place 100 meters away from the American Commercial Service building. The Moscow City Police Department's press service had no information regarding the killing.

The latest shooting comes on the heels of a wave of killings in which prominent Russian businessmen have been the targets of contract killers. Over the past year the Russian Business Roundtable, which encompasses 270 business associations around Russia, has lost 30 of its top officials to contract killings.

According to a Russian Interior Ministry report released this past July, 31,700 murders were committed in Russia in 1995, giving it one of the highest murder rates in the world.
