Early Date For Runoff

A second decisive round of voting in the Russian presidential election is likely to take place July 7, Interfax quoted a member of the Central Electoral Commission as saying Wednesday.

The electoral commission's secretary, Alexander Veshnyakov, told the agency that none of the presidential candidates was likely to get the more than 50 percent of votes needed for outright victory in the first round June 16.

Assuming this, the top two candidates will meet in the second round, formally due to be held 15 days after first-round results are officially announced.

Veshnyakov said the commission's staff was ready to count the returns of the first round in a week rather than the 15 days given by law.
