Davis Defenders Absent

KEY BISCAYNE, Florida () -- The United States will be without its top four players in next month's Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic.

Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang and Jim Courier, all ranked in the top 10, chose not to play because of their tournament schedules, captain Tom Gullikson said Monday.

Todd Martin and MaliVai Washington will play singles, and Patrick McEnroe and Pat Galbraith will play doubles in the second-round tie April 5-7 indoors at Prague. The Czech team will be led by streaky Petr Korda, ranked 50th on the ATP Tour computer.

Only Agassi has said he will be unavailable all year.

"Andre has really indicated that the Olympics are his main patriotic priority for the year," Gullikson said. "I think the other guys would certainly be available."
