Crimean Charter Edited

KIEV () -- Ukraine's parliament on Thursday rejected large sections of a constitution proposed by the pro-Russian Crimean peninsula and politicians from the region accused the chamber of fomenting tension.

Ukrainian deputies approved the proposed Crimean constitution on first reading after an hour-long debate, but removed a series of provisions they considered separatist.

Pro-Russian sentiment in Crimea, run by Moscow from the late 18th century until 1954, has been a thorn in Ukraine's side since independence.
