Cigar Takes Dubai Cup

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates () -- Cigar turned back a strong challenge from Soul of the Matter in the final furlong and won his 14th straight race Wednesday, capturing the $4 million Dubai World Cup.

It was an impressive performance for the 1995 North American Horse of the Year, who easily put away L'Carriere turning from home, then held off Soul of the Matter, who came fast on the outside.

The victory was the second this year for Cigar, who was a 1-5 favorite in New York, and 14th in a row -- two behind this century's record of 16 shared by Citation and Ribot.

With the victory, Cigar earned $2.4 million, the world's richest purse, and became the highest-earning racehorse in North America with career winnings of $7,669,015, surpassing Alysheba's total of $6,679,242.
