Chechen Bypass Mulled

MOSCOW () -- Russia's Gazprom plans to reconstruct a natural gas pipeline to bypass the republic of Chechnya, Interfax reported Wednesday.

The pipeline, which supplies the Russian region of Dagestan, now passes through Chechnya, where war between secessionists and Russian troops has raged for 16 months. Russia claims that rebel sabotage has disrupted the delivery of gas to Dagestan.

The pipeline supplies 5-6 million cubic meters of the 7 million cubic meters that Dagestan consumes each day.
