Cannibal Suspect Held

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine -- A 33-year-old man suspected of triple murder and cannibalism was arrested in this Ukrainian Black Sea port city, police said Tuesday.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was arrested in an apartment where police found three bodies -- those of the female owner, her mother and her lover -- with multiple stab wounds, said the city police.

Investigators described the killings as being "especially brutal" and said they also found the internal organs of two of the victims in saucepans. On a plate, there was a roasted piece of meat they suspected to be human flesh, the press service said.

Police said the suspect, arrested last Sunday, was a former convict who was probably responsible for another murder of a woman before the current killings. He is due to undergo psychiatric examination and might face the death penalty if found fit to stand trial and convicted.

No further details were immediately released.

Several cannibalism cases have been reported in the former Soviet Union this year.

Last month, police in the Siberian city of Kemerovo said a suspect had confessed to killing a man and making pelmeni, or Russian-style dumplings, out of his remains, which he shared with two drinking partners.

A day later, police in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar arrested a suspected cannibal who was caught frying human flesh in his home.

Police officers also reportedly found boiled human flesh near the frying pan, and the dismembered bodies of two elderly men in the bathroom.
