Candidate Rejected

MOSCOW () -- Russia's Central Elections Commission refused to register State Duma deputy Vladimir Bryntsalov as a candidate for the June presidential elections at its Friday session, Interfax reported.

Bryntsalov, a multimillionaire businessman who heads the pharmaceutical firm Farein, submitted as many as 1.349 million signatures in his support, said CEC member Andrei Beloborodov.

The CEC disallowed 477,000 of the signatures, saying instances of falsified signatures were reported in 16 Russian regions, the agency said. Many of the signatures were for fictitious persons.

Bryntsalov said Friday he intended to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court and sue for damages.
