Britain Fights for Veto

LONDON () -- Britain said Tuesday it will fight any attempt to water down its right to veto proposed European Union legislation it does not like.

Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind said Britain would take a hard line at a European Union conference later this month, but his pledge may not be sufficient to prevent another round of infighting within the ruling Conservative Party over the sovereignty Britain has already ceded to Brussels.

Many existing members say an expanded EU will only work if more decisions taken by ministers are on the basis of a system of qualified majority voting. In this system even larger members could occasionally have to submit to the majority will.
