Boeing, Ilyushin to Work on Air Safety

Officials from Boeing and Ilyushin signed an agreement Tuesday that paves the way for cooperation between U.S. and Russian air manufacturing companies in the area of aviation safety.

Robert Spitzer, Boeing's vice president for engineering, signed a memorandum of understanding with his Russian counterpart, Ilyushin's general designer and chief executive officer, Genrikh Novozhilov. The document envisages exchanging information on safety issues and joint research on airplane fatigue.

"Safety is paramount in our industry," Spitzer said in a joint news conference. Though the Russian air industry has been criticized in recent years for poor safety standards, Spitzer voiced confidence in Russian aviation's quality. Novozhilov, whose company is one of the two main Russian aircraft design bureaus said that Ilyushin "has always paid great attention to safety issues."

Spitzer also signed agreements of cooperation with Russia's National Institute of Aviation Technologies and Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, organizations that research aviation design.
