Benin Vote Deadlocked

COTONOU, Benin () -- Presidential elections ended in a stalemate, forcing a second round of voting March 17 in the small nation that led the African wave of democracy in 1989.

Though final results of weekend polling were not yet known Wednesday, estimates put Benin's incumbent President Nicephore Soglo neck-and-neck with the dictator he defeated five years ago, General Mathieu Kerekou.

Kerekou, who had been expected to gain enough votes to force a runoff, was said to have obtained 32 percent of the votes to Soglo's 31 percent.
