Bank Issues Commemorative Coins

The Central Bank is issuing a new 3-ruble coin, but it's not a sign of impending victory in the fight against inflation.

It was minted to commemorate a different battle: the epic victory of Dmitry Donskoi, the great knight of Moscow and Vladimir, over the Mongol "Golden Horde" at Kulikovskoye Pole in 1380.

A total of five coins, containing 90 percent silver or 22-carat gold, will honor Donskoi as part of a series commemorating 1,000 years of Russian history.

The oversize coins, in denominations of 3 to 100 rubles, are due to be released for sale soon.
