Amnesty Targets Sydney

SYDNEY () -- The human rights group Amnesty International says Australia's justice system is weighted heavily against aborigines, who have unusually high rates of arrest, detention and death in custody.

"The way the criminal justice and penal systems function makes aborigines particularly vulnerable to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment,'' Heinz Schurmann-Zeggel, an Amnesty researcher, said in a statement on Friday. "The high rate of aboriginal deaths in custody is also due to the dramatically disproportionate representation of aboriginal people in detention.''

A delegation from Amnesty has been in Australia since early March and has received reports of alleged ill treatment of aborigines by police almost daily, Schurmann-Zeggel said.
