1 Million Refugees

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Central Russia () -- More than 1 million refugees now live in Russia, mainly because of unrest and turmoil around the former Soviet Union, according to the head of the Federal Migration Service.

Tatyana Regent, the agency's chief, told a meeting of regional government and migration officials in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday that the figure will not decline as long as armed conflicts continue within and around Russia's borders. She said the latest figures put the number of refugees in Russia at 1.02 million, Itar-Tass said. The Federal Migration Service has said there are more than 610,000 displaced people just from the war in Chechnya
