MT/CNN Poll Shows Yeltsin Moving Up

With less than 13 weeks to go before the presidential elections, Boris Yeltsin is gaining on Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov and looks likely to make it to a second round runoff, according to the first of a series of opinion polls commissioned by The Moscow Times and CNN television. The poll, carried out by the CESSI Institute for Comparative Social Research among 1,170 respondents in towns and rural areas across Russia, found that Zyuganov was still the clear favorite, with 19.1 percent saying they would vote for him. Yeltsin was in second place with 14 percent and Yabloko leader Grigory Yavlinsky third with 6.2 percent. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent and is the first of six CESSI will produce for The Moscow Times and CNN, five before the June 16 elections and one before the likely run-off between the two leading candidates.
