Workers Protest Ford

MINSK ) -- Officials at Belarus's largest factory urged President Alexander Lukashenko to halt plans to assemble Ford cars at the plant, but a presidential adviser said Thursday the scheme would go ahead.

Staff at the Minsk tractor plant were back at work after a one-day walkout in protest of plans to produce Ford Escort cars and vans.

But an official said representatives of the plant's 30,000 workers signed an appeal to Lukashenko to be allowed to produce tractors as originally planned.

"The Belarus tractor is as much a national symbol to us as Ford is to America," said the official.
