White School to Appeal

POTGIETERSRUS, South Africa () -- A whites-only school forced to admit black pupils said Friday it was appealing to South Africa's highest court to keep blacks out.

A group of black children became the first nonwhites Thursday to enroll at the primary school in the town of Potgietersrus, 250 kilometers north of Johannesburg.

The high court said it would hear the application Monday. The high court application was based on the idea that Afrikaners, the descendants of mainly Dutch settlers, had a right under international law to self-determination as an ethnic minority, the Afrikaans-language newspaper Beeld said.
