U.S. Liberal Wins

PORTLAND, Oregon () -- In an election billed as an early barometer for the 1996 national political season, a liberal Democrat narrowly defeated a conservative Republican in an election for a U.S. Senate seat.

Representative Ron Wyden survived attacks labeling him a tax-and-spend liberal to narrowly win the special election Tuesday to replace the disgraced Bob Packwood.

The razor-thin victory buoyed the hopes of the national Democratic Party, which now has cut the Republicans' Senate majority to 53-47.
