Urals Girl Seized As Debt 'Security'

A Russian businesswoman kidnapped a teenage girl in the Urals town of Chelyabinsk as "security" for the girl's mother's debt, a local police spokesman said Wednesday.

He declined to give further details but a Chelyabinsk newspaper reported that the businesswoman and two of her trading firms' bodyguards were arrested after holding the girl for six hours Tuesday.

The girl's mother had taken 6 million rubles ($1,300) worth of goods from the firm, intending to sell them on consignment. But the venture failed and she never paid for the merchandise.

The businesswoman and her bodyguards went to the woman's home Tuesday, but her 17-year-old son refused to let them in, the paper said.

When his 14-year-old sister Katya returned from school, the three grabbed her, bundled her into a car and left a note saying: "Give us the money, and you will get Katya back."

"We've had several such cases," said an Interior Ministry official in Moscow.
