Ukraine's Army Suicides

KIEV () -- About 60 servicemen in the Ukrainian army committed suicide last year, and the number of cases of soldiers taking their lives is rising, an official said Wednesday.

"An increase in suicides among our servicemen is caused by the permanent deterioration of living conditions in the army," said Valery Korol, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

Uncertainty about their future and the lack of housing are common reasons for officers, who are more prone than regular soldiers, to commit suicide, said Korol. The military is also worried by a "lowering of the intellectual level" of servicemen. About a quarter of the conscripts in the 400,000-strong army have not finished high school.
