Turning Left Off Znamenka

Last week I came across a problem. The Moscow city government has closed the left turn from Ulitsa Znamenka onto Mokhovaya Ulitsa, which later turns into Okhotny Ryad.

Now you have to drive straight on toward Leninsky Prospekt over the Bolshoi Kammeny Bridge. You take the right-hand lane on the bridge and turn right onto Ulitsa Serafimovicha, then drive around under the bridge. Then you drive back over the bridge and toward the city center.

However, there is a always a traffic jam on the bridge during the daytime and so you are better off using a different route.

You should turn right off Ulitsa Znamenka onto Ulitsa Volkhonka and drive straight until you get to Ploshchad Prechistenskikh Vorot (formerly Kropotkinskaya Ploshchad). Here, the traffic wave divides into two and you should choose the right-hand flow in order to turn left through the square. Drive straight on toward the Moskva River, then turn to the left again along the embankment and drive straight on toward the Bolshoi Kammeny Bridge. Turn left underneath the bridge: This takes you toward Mokhovaya Ulitsa.

If you are coming from Novy Arbat and want to get onto Mokhovaya or Okhotny Ryad, there is a better route. Don't get onto Ulitsa Znamenka from Arbatskaya Ploshchad, but instead turn right into the tunnel that connects two sections of the Boulevard Ring. From here you can turn right and get onto Mokhovaya and Okhotny Ryad via Bolshaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa (formerly Ulitsa Gertsena) or via Tverskaya Ulitsa, depending on where exactly you want to end up. If you need Mokhovaya Ulitsa, you should use the first route.
