Tugboat to the Rescue

MANILA, Philippines () -- A tugboat Tuesday was nearing a luxury cruise ship, carrying more than 800 people, that was immobilized by an engine fire in the South China Sea, officials said.

The 4,000-horsepower tug was expected to reach the MV Sagafjord late Tuesday night, but probably would need more than three days to tow the ship to a port in the Philippines, the nearest country, said an officer of the company that owns the tug.

The ship encountered trouble before midnight Monday about 370 kilometers west of Manila as it was sailing toward Malaysia from Hong Kong, its London-based owner, Cunard Lines Ltd., said.
