Tajiks Invite Oppositio

MOSCOW () -- The Tajik government has invited leaders of the opposition to return home for the first time since the 1992 civil war to address a special session of parliament March 11, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.

A meeting of the parliamentary presidium agreed Tuesday a deal struck at the last round of peace talks in Ashgabad to invite opposition leaders to the Tajik capitel, Dushanbe.

Leaders of the Democratic/Islamic opposition have been living in exile in Iran and Afghanistan along with tens of thousands of refugees after they were dislodged from power and fled the country in 1992. Members of the Islamic opposition have been fighting the government in a guerrilla war in the mountains ever since.

The Tajikistan government and opposition rebels Monday promised the United Nations to extend their expired cease-fire for another three months, Reuters reported Security Council sources as saying.
