Swan Feeding Plea

TALLINN, Estonia () -- Environmentalists in Estonia have launched an appeal for people to feed hundreds of swans that have been trapped by ice during a sudden cold snap, one environmentalist said Friday. The swans are facing starvation as waters along Estonia's coast freeze over and their feeding grounds disappear under a layer of ice.

"They badly need feeding now as the very few open spaces do not have any more food for the swans that have not migrated south," said Jaan Naaber of the Harjumaa nature protection department, responsible for northern Estonia.

Nature protection clubs have called on people to go and feed the swans in the only open stretches of water near Tallinn and the port of Paldiski in northwest Estonia.
