State 'Saves Science'

MOSCOW () -- The Russian government has issued the last installment of a 266 billion ruble ($56 million) payment to the Academy of Sciences, four days earlier than promised, officials said Thursday.

"For today, Russian science has been saved," said the president of the Academy's trade union, Vladimir Khlebodarov. "I've been feeling ill all week at the prospect of having to remind the government to get this done by February 25. We never expected this to happen."

Employees appealed to the government earlier this month, demanding 250 billion rubles in wages and operating costs, 100 billion rubles of which was back payment for 1995.
