Spain Campaign Begins

MADRID () -- Under a threat of increasing violence by Basque ETA guerrillas, campaigning begins formally Friday for general elections March 3 likely to give Spain a conservative government after 13 years of Socialist rule.

The separatist guerrillas of ETA, or Basque Homeland and Freedom, have taken center-stage, shocking Spaniards with the murders of a judge and a Socialist politician in the last 10 days.

The conservative Popular Party, or PP, of Jose Maria Aznar, predicted by opinion polls to replace Socialist Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, has warned foreign governments it expects a major surge in ETA attacks after its expected victory.
