Soskovets Slams Kulikov's Plans

First Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Soskovets criticized Tuesday the renationalization proposals floated last week by Interior Minister Anatoly Kulikov and said the government would not adopt them.

"One should not take Kulikov's statements too seriously," Soskovets told a news conference at the Kremlin Palace of Congresses where he attended a conference of small-business entrepreneurs.

Kulikov proposed to renationalize some of Russia's largest banks and energy enterprises at a government meeting two weeks ago. His statement caused serious concerns among the Russian business community, but numerous government officials have since spoken out against the plan.

"I was present at the moment when Kulikov spoke," Soskovets said. "Kulikov's remarks about the nationalization of commercial enterprises and banks do not at all reflect the government position on this issue. I think what he said is a private opinion of a group of experts of the Interior Ministry."
