Rest-Room Diamond Thief Collared

A Russian diamond worker trying to steal gems was caught by a company spy watching through a rest-room peephole, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The diamond worker was spotted washing a piece of rock in a toilet at the Udachny mine in northern Russia's Yakutia region, the daily Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.

The report said the thief frequently washed diamonds in the toilet and hid them in his locker at the mine's dressing room. He reportedly told investigators he planned to smuggle the stones out by throwing them over the fence.

The Udachny mine produces 85 percent of Russia's diamonds.

According to the newspaper, security at the mine is tight. Along with numerous X-ray machines, it hires plainclothes security agents to mix with workers. Employees are thoroughly searched, and some are hired to watch the toilets through peepholes.

"Despite all these precautions, area residents say it's not too difficult to buy uncut diamonds in Udachny," the newspaper said.
